My ‘Black Mirror’ Season 4 Episode Rankings

A new show that I’ve recently become extremely addicted to is Netflix’s Black Mirror. An anthology series, each episode is an independent story that I used to think existed in separate universes, but I’m not sure if that’s true anymore as the recent season was filled with Easter Eggs that seemed to indicate that they were connect. Who knows at this point.

Anyway, I find the concept of Black Mirror to be absolutely brilliant. From the first episode I watched (Nosedive), I was instantly hooked. Making my way through season 4, every episode was something really different and unique that just has something about it that keeps you watching. I don’t know if it’s schadenfreude or something else, but coming off of every episode I was put in a mood I’m not used to feeling from a TV show. Watching horrible things happening to good people (and vice-versa), there’s a tone that’s set and in the air that really makes you feel reflective. For Black Mirror it’s all about society, where we’re coming from, and where we’re going, and the reflective part comes in when you start to imagine and think about how you yourself would react and adapt in these worlds (or world) they’re showing off. It can be a scary thought to ponder over sometimes.

Because I love Black Mirror so much, I wanted to share my thoughts on season 4 in the form of an episode ranking. I’ve also shared some thoughts on each episode along with the rankings, which you can check out below.

6- Metalhead- Of all the Black Mirror episodes I’ve seen so far (season 4 and Nosedive), this was the only one that really left me feeling unsatisfied. The episode plays out like a survival story in a post-apocalyptic world, but there was something missing in it that didn’t really have me coming away feeling the familiar thoughts and motions I usually go through. I think it might be the lack of social commentary that did it, or maybe it was the fact that the entire episode was filmed in old-school black and white. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

5- Arkangel- Interesting concept, terrifying when you think about it. A story about a future where parents can track and monitor their children’s movements and see everything they do, Arkangel is about a mother who uses the technology to helicopter-parent her daughter to disastrous effects. It’s not a bad episode by any means, just not my favorite.

4- Crocodile- Ok, of all the episodes this season, this was the one with the kicker. Crocodile is about a serial killer obsessed with covering her tracks, and watching this, honestly, I was gripped and mortified. It’s a terrifying story that for the people who started watching Black Mirror this season, it will separate them into the ones who are fans, and those who decide the show isn’t for them. I think it’ll be the deciding factor for many. No one goes right to bed after watching an episode like this.

3- Black Museum-  Black Museum is an episode I came away from not loving, but ended up really thinking about it in the days after.  Telling a story of a man harboring artifacts connected to people who’ve had their lives ruined, it’s an interesting, and at times creepy, tale that really makes you think about future innovations. Oh, and the plot twist at the end was pretty solid.

2- USS Callister– Dang, this episode was fantastic. Absolutely incredible. I’ve gone back and watched it twice now, and I loved it just as much on the rewatch. With incredible visuals and a fantastic, and at times horrifying, story (as the show tends to go), it’s everything about Black Mirror that I love. I was locked to my seat through its entire duration and on the verge of ripping my hair out from the stress. It’s a cinematic quality story, that I think everyone can enjoy. It doesn’t hurt that there are also some lines that are just straight up hilarious.

1- Hang The DJ- I can’t quite put into words just how much I loved this episode. Hang The DJ tells the tale of a world where people are pair together by a portable device called “coach” for a certain amount of time, after which they are forced to split. Eventually “coach” leads them to a final pairing, which is said to be their perfect mate. To say this story is adorable would be an understatement. And the ending, oh my gosh the ending. I went into this season thinking the creep factor of the episodes would quickly turn me off, but this was the one that sealed it for me and made me a fan.

Overall I found this season to be really enjoyable. Needless to say, I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next one, and at this rate it’s bound to be fantastic. I know it goes against how the show really works, but I hope we get some more episode like Hang The DJ with happy endings. I absolutely loved the two this season that had them, but I think having them too often would be an unpopular idea. I’m not sure.

So that’s how I rank the episodes. How do you? Which episode was your favorite/least favorite? Let me know in the comments below.
